Special Awards for tennis facilities
In 2009, Tennis Spa Hotel Wolfgangsee was voted one of Europe’s top 3 tennis hotels by the German Tennis Magazine.
The hotel was also voted one of Europe’s top 10 tennis resorts by leading UK tennis magazine “ACE” in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The following is an extract from the ACE magazine article published in 2006:
Tennishotel Wolfgangsee, located 40 minutes drive from Salzburg, is a small tennis hotel run by a family who truly believe in giving guests a warm welcome.
Its setting is quite spectacular; the surrounding mountains took the starring scenic role in ‘The Sound of Music’ back in the sixties and so close is Lake Wolfgangsee that a misplaced shot could almost land a tennis ball in the crystal-clear water.
The resort opened in 1979 as the brainchild of Hubert Hinterberger who spotted a growing interest in tennis in Austria around that time. It wasn’t long before the hotel was a huge success, winning several awards as the country’s premier tennis holiday destination.
The hotel is now in the care of Hubert’s daughter, Connie, who maintains the same high levels of comfort and courtesy. All the rooms have balconies with views of the lake and mountains beyond, and although there are only three outdoor clay courts, securing court time is simple and free.
Tennis tuition is provided by bilingual South African coaches who each bring something different to the process of improving their pupils’ game. Coaching mainly takes place in the mornings as there is much to see and do in the afternoons. Saturdays are reserved for tournaments and are open to all.
The Hinterberger family gladly lead tours up the Leonsberg Mountain (which they happen to own) and always offer to pick up visitors from the airport on arrival – nothing is too much trouble.
During the winter months snow transforms the area and guests can combine skiing at the nearby Postalm and Dachstein resorts with tennis on tailormade packages. Special activities such as midnight walks and horse sleigh rides are optional extras.
Three indoor carpet courts and three outdoor clay courts. The indoor courts are of a good standard; the clay courts are fairly basic and there are no floodlights. Rackets and balls are available free of charge, although new balls are for sale. The courts are available free of charge for hotel guests. In the morning the courts are taken up with coaching, otherwise guests can use them as much as they want, daytime and evenings. In the winter indoor availability may be more stretched.
At any one time there are between three and five full-time coaches with head coach Pravesh Mahabeer present almost all year-round. All the coaches are USPTR trained and all can play to an extremely high standard. There are two types of tuition available to the guests: ‘Happy Tennis’ – 90 minutes of coaching daily and ‘Intensive’ – two 90 minute sessions daily. Group sizes are four players to one coach and the emphasis is on improving technique without changing much of the player’s individual style. The coaches swap groups every half hour. At the end of each day there is video analysis, as well as exhibition matches between the pros. To conclude the week, the coaches organise singles and doubles tournaments for guests.
Other Sports and Leisure Facilities
The holiday package includes access to the spa with an outdoor heated pool, sauna and Jacuzzi. There is also a massage room, solarium, gym and a beauty parlour, all charged accordingly. In true Austrian fashion, there is a range of invigorating treatments to choose from, including the hay bath and the Cleopatra bath. Bike hire is free and an ideal way to see the lake close up. When the snow settles, Nordic (cross-country) skiing is an alternative.
The Hinterbergers own much of the local terrain which guests are free to explore. The family can arrange watersports activities on the lake: waterskiing, windsurfing and sailing.
In the grounds of the hotel there is a putting green, complemented by the 18-hole Salzkammergut golf course seven minutes drive away and in less than two minutes, guests can drive to a riding school.
Film fans can sign up for the ‘Sound of Music’ tour taking in much of the scenery from the popular musical.
Salzburg airport is served by British Airways, BMI, KLM, Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, Ryan Air (from London Stansted), Flybe (Southampton & Birmingham) and Thomsonfly.com (Coventry and Bournemouth).
Comments from previous guests
The rooms are excellent, clean and spacious with beautiful views of the lake or the mountains. The food is very good and the swimming pool and grounds mean the kids can safely run around and have a lot of fun. For those who like tennis it is ideal. You have the choice of indoor carpet or outdoor clay courts which you are free to use as much as you like during your stay. The coaches are good and the group sessions are a great way to improve your game.
The Hotel is close enough to St Wolgang and the lake and if you have a car it is easy to get around to the nearby towns and expore the area.
The thing that really makes Tennis Hotel so enjoyable is the informal, friendly atmosphere. We went in a family week and had a great time getting to know all the people staying. The family who run the place go out of their way to make you feel at home.”
The rooms are large and very comfortable. Ours had a beautiful view down the valley to the lake (it was a standard room) and the food in the hotel is extremely good. We were attracted by the tennis facilities which are excellent. The indoor courts are very good as are the outdoor clay courts. The standard of coaching is high.
But what is, in our experience, unique about this hotel is the warmth of the hospitality from the family who own and run it. It’s just like joining a very nice private house party. We will certainly return – quite soon, I think.”
